Last year, I surveyed the people of Denison about what they wanted to do with Princes Wharf Number 1. Most people wanted to keep the shed, but for it to be more useful and flexible space.
The proposed development achieves all these goals and reflects the wishes of its users, the people of Hobart, and I am pleased that the Tasmanian Government is getting on with the job.
The new design will be able to comfortably seat up to 1500 people, or be sectioned off for smaller, more intimate functions. It also allows us to make use of both the waterfront and Salamanca sides of this popular location.
The design also addresses the realities of dealing with a building that has a long history in Hobart, including retaining the working port and dealing with asbestos in the roof.
The shed design is now open for the final stage of consultation, and I encourage everyone to get down to the shed and comment on the future of Tasmania’s waterfront.
